Essential items for local and family historians

Find a loo, Life's necessities, Research backpack

Sewerage RecordsI know everyone will have very different suggestions but yesterday while I was out driving I heard a suggestion on the radio and had to instantly pull over and get my own!

I am a VERY new owner of a mobile phone – so new that incoming calls go to message bank as I’m struggling to answer them!

So what was the essential item I got yesterday?  I’m not sure why it took me so long to get one.  Anyone who knows me knows that my favourite subject is Sewerage Records – I was rapt in this photo on the cover of my book!

WinkThe item is a phone App called Aussie Loos!  There are quite a few to choose from but I grabbed this one – it didn’t even cost a penny!

And I love the button – “I’m Busting”

Does it work?  Of course – tested it on my back verandah and it instantly located the two public loos nearby.

I think this is an essential for all types of historians – there isn’t always a private convenient bush out in the country.  Can you imagine how handy this app would be?  … you’re in a country cemetery where time just flies because you’re finding so many relatives …

I know this “essential” is out of left field, but what are the other essentials that every good local and family historian should have in their “research backpack”???

P.S. The “list” now has it’s own web page called Historian’s Backpack

Started some “gunna” tasks

Icons and images, The Surname Society

I just love historyOK – I’ve started some “gunna” tasks – you know the ones – gunna do this, gunna do that, gunna do something else.

In between applying for jobs I’m trying to be as productive as possible – of course there’s always the danger of starting too many gunna tasks so I have to be sensible.

One society I’ve signed up with that is part of this gunna avalanche is The Surname Society.  Yes, I know there is the one name society but this new one “feels right” for me.

http://surname-society.org/

And it was another blog and a Facebook post that alerted me to it.  Of course another gunna task was this new blog and last night I scratched together this little symbol for my blog – I don’t think it can be mistaken for what it “says” … for now I’m happy with it.

Not THAT “header” image

tango_face_angel_115994Absolutely rolling around on the floor laughing – I know, I’m supposed to say ROTFL but this is for the benefit of those who don’t know what ROTFL means!  I just spotted my last post on my Facebook page and that caused the ROTFL because the Facebook page showed my mugshot [of course!] and it looked like I was saying I was falling for it [my mugshot] and not the lovely photo at the top of my blog page.  When things are being “cross-posted” I really must think more about how it’s going to look on the other platform!

What should I do?  I was going to create a special tailor-made image for the header but this one is so lovely – I’m falling for it !

What’s it all about?

Still experimenting

Barwon Heads Coffee PalaceIt’s time to start another blog but a less-restrictive one compared to my other blogs which are:

  • Geelong and District – covering local and family history in the greater Barwon region
  • My ancestors’arrivals – where they came from and why

I also want to stay rather flexible with the layout so I can “play” with the different themes.  For the moment I’m sticking to free themes and I just want to experiment … click on a theme and change everything.

I also need to remind myself of the different settings, tools, appearances etc. that make WordPress so much fun to use.

Last week I was talking to a country historical society about how they could use WordPress for their web site and their blog.  Perhaps I’ll do some more blogs on just how to use WordPress for that.  In the meantime I’ll find a photo to add because I don’t like blogs without photos! 🙂 … Susie Zada
