Digitising, Geelong Advertiser, NLA Newspapers, Poll, TROVE

Old Geelong Advertiser BuildingOK, I’ll admit it … in our region [Geelong and District] we’re biased when it comes to “our” newspaper.  Almost three years ago we started a campaign to get the Geelong Advertiser [aka The Addy] digitised and available online on NLA Newspapers / TROVE.  But the Addy is more than just our Geelong region.  Follow our progress from that first blog:

  • Geelong Advertiser … where it is? [9 Jan 2012]
  • Geelong Advertiser … update! [10 Jan 2012]
  • Geelong Advertiser … 24th June 2012 update! [24 Jun 2012]
  • Geelong Advertiser … it’s here! [3 Jul 2012]
  • Geelong Advertiser … update – what’s on TROVE! [3 Nov 2012]
  • Geelong Advertiser … THANK YOU! [7 Nov 2012]
  • THE biggest news for Geelong and district [4 May 2013]
  • Geelong Advertiser: WWI years [11 Aug 2013]
  • Time Capsules and the Geelong Advertiser [30 Nov 2013
  • Update on Geelong Advertiser on TROVE [1 Dec 2013]
  • Yeah! We’ve got more Addies! [27 May 2014]
  • Lots of Geelong Addies! [20 June 2014]
  • Geelong Advertiser – even more! [26 Dec 2014]

So that’s our current status but we can’t let it rest there!

We need to look at ways of extending the digitisation past 1924 and that means fund-raising.  We have discussed this with the Geelong Advertiser to see if they could host a trust account for digitising the Addy to which people could contribute online – we haven’t totally given up on that but there has been little interest shown by the corporate owners.

A few of our local societies have expressed a desire to contribute lump sums – perhaps these could then be added to “individual contributions” through Crowd Funding like Pozible.

Family photos, Football players, Geelong Football Club

1928 Drysdale Football Team - all names available

There were a few surprises when searching for photos of footballers of the Geelong Football Club – particularly the number of descendants [grandchildren] who had no idea their ancestor had ever played for the Geelong Football Club, let alone played football at a senior level.

Apart from searches that come up on NLA Newspapers [TROVE], I guess it would only be from oral histories passed down through the family.  Many family or local history societies will have a collection of football teams similar the this image – all players and officials were clearly identified in this one from the Bellarine Historical Society.  I wonder how many groups have the names from this project amongst their football photos?

To refresh those who didn’t see the earlier post on my Geelong and District Blog, here are the details from the GFC web site:

The Geelong Cats are nearing the end of an enormous project.

We have spent the last several years, gathering images of every player who has played with Geelong, since 1877… whether he played 1 game or 300 games.

As of today we have gathered around 1117 images, and we are now only looking for 206 to complete this exciting work.

We don’t expect to get an image of the player in a geelong jumper. The best style of image is a football team photo, where he is looking straight into the camera. wedding images are also good as they usually show this “face on” style of image. of course, any images will be helpful!

We are looking to complete this work before the end of the year and so, we need these images before 20th December 2014.

If you think you may have a photo of any of the past players listed, please contact:
Mr. Bob Gartland,
Vice President
Chair, Honouring the Past Geelong Football Club
Mobile: 0418 522 526
Email: bob@gartland.com.au

The most recent appeal for photos in November uncovered 50 photos for this project, so the required list is getting smaller.  Please check the list carefully to see if you can identify anyone.

Historian's Backpack, Land Victoria, Public Record Office Victoria

Research TripYesterday was almost traumatic!  It was a day of research – firstly at Land Victoria – Land Information Centre at Laverton [Victoria, Australia], then PROV [Public Record Office Victoria] at North Melbourne.

And it was all my own fault! I’ve been to both archives before, know exactly where they are, and had packed my Historian’s Backpack many times before.

BUT after all the activity in the last few days with input from so many helpful people I was SO nervous that I would forget something or had forgotten something!  It’s a horrible feeling made worse by bumping into people I know who may have followed the Historian’s Backpack saga on Facebook.

Now I have another dilemma – do I add the couple of extra items suggested for the Backpack or do I work on the mass of records I obtained yesterday at Land Victoria and PROV?  Priorities?  Or do I feel another blog coming on – How to prioritise our research – or maybe – How to de-stress your research?  Oh, the mind is working overtime.

A chuckle always helps with de-stressing!  Of course I was showing off my new Aussie Loos app to Pam [my co-researcher].  We were leaving Laverton and Pam said she wanted to leave Cherry Lane in the opposite direction as we could see the freeway and it was bumper to bumper – she was sure we could come out somewhere on our “normal” route to PROV and bypass the pain of trying to get back on the freeway.  As I already had Aussie Loos open to see nearest Loos, I just moved the map to follow our potential route – and not only did we find the shortcut avoiding the freeway totally [went over the top of it twice], we got to PROV early with plenty of time to use their Loos [which of course weren’t and shouldn’t have been on the map].

A most satisfying day all round!
